Say What?

Today’s scripture: Luke 8:9-15 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message)

As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.

My thoughts (Rev. Tammy Mills):

Normally, I love a good story or parable. I get all excited when someone uses stories to teach!

I love the idea of using stories to teach because they allow the hearer to get the message they need at the time. Many folks might hear the same parable or story and each draw a different correct conclusion as to its meaning or teaching point. Stories allow the learner to interact with the material!

So here is my dilemma with today’s scripture: Why did the author think it necessary to explain this parable? For me the parable held so much more power when I wasn’t told “here is the answer” or “here is the right way to understand it”! Frankly, I am a little miffed at the writer of this gospel! It is like he gave away the ending of a good movie!

So what do I do? Can I be miffed at a gospel passage? I guess I can!

But I’ll try to let my disappointment go and focus on what I thought the parable was teaching me. It was teaching me to think about how (or whether) I was receiving God’s word. I think I could relate to each place where the seeds fell, depending on the season of my life or what that particular seed was.

Today I will try to nurture the seed wherever it lands.

Thought for the day: Have you ever been miffed at a scripture? How is God’s word growing in you?

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
