Paper Recycling comes to Jesus MCC
March 25, 2006

paper recycling imageYou may have noticed the green and yellow collection box in the upper parking lot at the church.  It's a drop-off point for recyclable paper. When we put paper in this bin, several good things happen:

  • We save trees, water, and electricity. The company that collects the paper (Abitibi Consolidated) uses it to make newsprint.  By using waste paper to make new paper (instead of trees), Abitibi uses less water and electricity. And every ton of paper they recycle saves about 17 trees.
  • Jesus MCC receives payment. Payment is based on a sliding scale, based on how much we collect monthly. If we gather 0 to 3.99 tons in a month, we receive $5 per ton.  4 to 7.99 tons in a month will get us $15 per ton, and 8 or more tons will be paid $20 per ton.
  • We help to make the earth a better place. Whether you think of the big picture (more trees = fewer greenhouse gasses) or the small picture (I can get that stack of newspapers out of my house!), it's all good.

How can I participate?
Collect paper at home. Bring it with you to church, and drop it off in the green bin.

Acceptable papers are newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, envelopes, folders, fax and copy paper, and colored paper.

Not acceptable: cardboard, phone books, and any food wrappers. If you bring paper to church in plastic grocery bags, please don't put the bag in the collection bin!  If you have questions, contact the church office. We thank you, and so do the trees!
