Wait For The Lord

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

One of the best ways we can learn about God and ourselves is by hearing each other’s stories.

In this sermon, we hear from Dan Funk, Jesus MCC’s Justice Minister. He shares his spiritual journey and some of the lessons he’s learned, including what it means to wait on God.

Powered by God

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Why does it seem so often that we have no power for living? Why does it seem that we just drag from one day to the next, never really engaging in life? Deacon Robert Ferguson will bring us a message of hope and encouragement.

Robert’s sermon is part of our Black History Celebration Sunday.

Everyday Miracles

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

This sermon explores “everyday miracles.” Does that sound like an oxymoron? Aren’t miracles, by definition, spectacular and amazing and not “everyday”?

We’ll look at the story of Jesus’ first miracle — turning the water into wine. We’ll see how we can partner with Christ to bring miracles to life, everyday. This sermon was presented by Deb Doty, Jesus MCC’s Director of Discipleship.

Family First

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

This sermon looks at what, for many lgbt people, are two of the most frightening passages in the Bible.

First is the story of Adam and Eve, so popular with the God-Hates-Fags crowd. They love to chant, “Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,” because it’s such a clever phrase — and it rhymes!

Then there’s Jesus’ hard teaching on divorce. Many of us were taught to interpret this as a strict prohibition against almost all divorce. And, for those of us who came to an understanding of our sexual orientation or gender identity late in life, and found ourselves in a divorce we hadn’t planned on, this teaching haunts us with guilt.

But did you know that those texts can be read to affirm lgbt people? Listen as we get to the heart of these passages.

This sermon was presented by Tyler Connoley, a friend and former member of Jesus MCC, and coauthor of The Children Are Free.

The Prodigal Father

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

We often hear platitudes about the “love of God” — but in this sermon, we’ll get some insight into how that love works.

We take a look at the familiar story of “The Prodigal Son”, and find that it tells us a lot more about God (as demonstrated by the father in the story) than it does about the son.

This sermon was presented by Deb Doty, Jesus MCC’s Director of Discipleship.

“The Secret” is a popular book and video that is capturing the attention of millions seeking to find the answer to living a happy, complete life.

But Jesus gave us the secret centuries ago to living happily and completely for all eternity. This week, we’re going to share Jesus’ thoughts on how to live the life worth living, simply by loving.

Wrestling With God

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

How do you react when you’re going through a difficult time? Do you think it’s because God is displeased with you, or has abandoned you?

This sermon looks at an incident from the life of Jacob as he went through a time of great struggle. And the struggle wasn’t because God was far away — just the opposite. God was very near, and the struggle led to great blessing.
