What the Prophets Said About You

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

So what did angels and prophets say when you were born? Nothing? Think again!

This sermon explores how the words of others have shaped our lives (for better or worse) just as profoundly as the words of angels and prophets shaped Jesus’ life.

Watch for a Christmas sermon that’s probably unlike any you’ve heard before.

Today’s scripture: Luke 2:1-14

Don’t Make Me Come Down There!

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

We’ve spent a couple weeks looking at stories surrounding the birth of Christ — it is the season, after all.

This week, something related but maybe not the first thing that comes to mind at Christmastime: What did it really mean for God to become human?

The scriptures say that Jesus “emptied himself” of divine privilege and power while he was in the flesh on earth. That has enormous ramifications for how we see God and how we are able to relate to God. Watch or listen for a message of encouragement and hope.

It’s an old, familiar story. But here we look at its historical context, and when we understand that, it becomes even more relevant and meaningful for us today.

Miracle on My Street

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

This sermon looks at a portion of the traditional Christmas story — the shepherds and angels.

Yawn! That old thing again? Not quite.

Have you ever wondered why these particular shepherds were told the incredible news and were allowed to see the Messiah?

There are a couple of clues in the text we can apply to our own circumstances, that may hold the key to us receiving our own revelation.

Are You Available?

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

This week, being so close Christmas and all, we’ll look at a portion of the Christmas story — the shepherds visit to the Christ child.

That old thing again? No surprises there! Blah, blah, blah.

It all depends on how you look at it. We’ll dig beneath the familiar to find something more. How can we, like the shepherds, be witness to the presence of God?

Everybody’s Searching for Something

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

What does your soul thirst for? Most of us could come up with a long list of things that would make us happy.

That’s part of the excitement of Christmas — it taps into that subconscious sense that maybe there is something out there, just waiting to surprise me, just waiting to be unwrapped, something that will quench this thirst in my soul.

In today’s Scripture, Jesus tells us a story about people like us –- thirsty people –- and how they finally found what they were looking for.
