Mind Over Matter

November 11, 2007 • Category: Christian Life

Are you generally a positive or a negative person? Do your thoughts lift you up, or drag you down?

Our thoughts shape our life. How we interpret a situation depends as much on what’s happening in our heads, as what is happening out there in the objective world.

But it’s so easy to allow our thoughts to run wild and to spiral downward into negativity. In this sermon, we look at how — with God’s help — we can take control of out thoughts and words, and harness their power to create a new and better life.

Born to Be a Champion

November 4, 2007 • Category: Christian Life

You were born to be a champion.

When you hear stuff like that, how do you react? Do your eyes roll with cynicism? Or can you embrace it?

Last week’s sermon looked at who we are — one of God’s dear ones, uniquely created in God’s image. This sermon looks at what we’re here to do.

You are not surplus. You are here for a unique, God-given purpose.

Apple of My Eye

October 28, 2007 • Category: Christian Life

How do you feel about yourself? What do you believe about yourself? It’s one of life’s most important questions, because it will dramatically influence your destiny.

  • If I think I’m not a good person, then I’m not.
  • If I think I’m not loveable, odds are I won’t be.
  • If I think I’ll never amount to much, I probably won’t.
  • If I think I’m not a gifted person, my own lack of self-esteem will hold me back.

So, how do you feel about yourself? How should you feel about yourself? Listen for a message of great encouragement.

Everyday Miracles

September 16, 2007 • Category: Christian Life

This sermon explores “everyday miracles.” Does that sound like an oxymoron? Aren’t miracles, by definition, spectacular and amazing and not “everyday”?

We’ll look at the story of Jesus’ first miracle — turning the water into wine. We’ll see how we can partner with Christ to bring miracles to life, everyday. This sermon was presented by Deb Doty, Jesus MCC’s Director of Discipleship.

When Mercy Rains Down

September 2, 2007 • Category: Christian Life, Church life

If you could pick only one thing to help you draw closer to God, which would it be:

  • prayer
  • Bible study
  • tithing
  • worship attendance
  • church membership

Answer: none of the above.  This sermon looks at the one thing that’s more potent than anything else for drawing us — individually or collectively — into the presence of God.

The Gift

August 26, 2007 • Category: Church life

Does religion, to you, seem like just a bunch of rules to keep? Maybe that’s how you were raised — or maybe that’s just how the loudest TV preachers present it.

But Jesus gave us a better way — a life of the Spirit, not a life of rules. This sermon looks at this conflict, of law vs. Spirit.

But we’ll take it a step farther, too. Is there something about this life of the Spirit that we have, that we can offer to the world?

What about us? Could we make the same mistake? Listen as we look at some of the signs of Jesus’ presence among us today.

Family First

August 12, 2007 • Category: Gay and Christian, Relationships

This sermon looks at what, for many lgbt people, are two of the most frightening passages in the Bible.

First is the story of Adam and Eve, so popular with the God-Hates-Fags crowd. They love to chant, “Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,” because it’s such a clever phrase — and it rhymes!

Then there’s Jesus’ hard teaching on divorce. Many of us were taught to interpret this as a strict prohibition against almost all divorce. And, for those of us who came to an understanding of our sexual orientation or gender identity late in life, and found ourselves in a divorce we hadn’t planned on, this teaching haunts us with guilt.

But did you know that those texts can be read to affirm lgbt people? Listen as we get to the heart of these passages.

This sermon was presented by Tyler Connoley, a friend and former member of Jesus MCC, and coauthor of The Children Are Free.
